$1 million greenway bypass expected to pass

Transportation leaders are expected Wednesday night to approve spending nearly $1 million to build a greenway bypass in the University area.

The Mallard Creek Greenway will be blocked by light rail construction near the University of North Carolina-Charlotte starting in early 2014.

Planners want to build a new greenway that would connect to J.W. Clay Boulevard and other nearby trails to provide joggers with a bypass around the closure.

Homeowners doing better on mortgage payments, report shows

The percentage of homeowners late on their mortgage payments made a huge drop in the first quarter of 2012.

At the end of March, about 11.8 percent of all loans were delinquent, which is the lowest level since the end of 2008.

While the number is still high, said analysts, it has dropped from 12.8 percent last year and 14.7 percent in 2010.

And the delinquency rate is not the only sign the housing market is recovering.

Home building grew in April. Construction increased nearly three points since March to more than 700,000 units.

That number is well above the average forecast of 680,000 units.

The April surge marked a rebound from when construction slowed in March.

Iredell’s budget $6M above last year’s

The Iredell County manager unveiled a new budget that is about $6 million more than last year’s budget.

He revealed the $160.5 budget for the 20123 fiscal year at Tuesday night’s commissioners meeting.

The new budget is an increase over last year’s $154.6 million budget.

Salary raises and education funding caused the increase in the budget.
